Nicholas Newton wins 2025 Marian Anderson Vocal Award

Washington National Opera has bestowed upon Nicholas Newton the 2025 Marian Anderson Vocal Award, named for the groundbreaking African American contralto. This award recognizes a young American singer in opera, oratorio, or recital repertory and is given annually by the Kennedy Center, offering its winner a cash prize, a residency at Washington’s Duke Ellington School of the Arts, and a recital presented by Washington National Opera.

Étude Arts proudly announces the general management of tenor Joseph Tancredi.  A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and Manhattan School of Music, he is a member of the International Opera Studio at Staatsoper Stuttgart.  Joseph Tancredi’s roles for Stuttgart include Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore, Fenton in Falstaff, and Cassio in Otello working, among others, with José Luis Gutiérrez, Tomáš Hanus, and  Stefano Montanari in productions by Barrie Kosky, Silvia Costa, and Kirill Serebrennikov. He has participated as an Apprentice Singer at the Santa Fe Opera for two summers, as a Renée Fleming Artist at the Aspen Music Festival, as a Studio Artist of Opera Maine, and in the Chautauqua Voice Institute.

Étude Arts is excited to share in the celebration of baritone Trevor Haumschilt-Rocha who has been awarded Second Place winner of the 2024 NEUE STIMMEN.

Past laureates of NEUE STIMMEN include Nathalie Stutzmann, René Pape, Michael Volle, Gwyn Hughes Jones, Hanno Müller-Brachmann, Elsa Dreisig, Nicole Car, and Pene Pati.

Étude Arts is excited to welcome Mexican-American baritone Trevor Haumschilt-Rocha for general management.

Trevor Haumschilt-Rocha joins the Opernstudio at Volksoper Wien for the 2024-26 seasons, with his anticipated debut in November as Robert in Jolanthe und der Nussknacker, a hybrid presentation of Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta and Nutcracker.  Additional responsibilities of the season include repertoire ranging from Le nozze di Figaro to Jonathan Dove’s Das verzauberte Schwein.

Having spent the summer of 2024 at the Aspen Music Festival as a Renée Fleming Fellow and under the tutelage of Ms. Fleming and Patrick Summers, co-Artistic Directors of Aspen Opera Theater and VocalARTS, Trevor Haumschilt-Rocha performed the roles of Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro and Peter in Hänsel und Gretel in fully-staged productions and appeared in a broad range of recitals and concerts with programming from Franz Schubert to Chris Thile.

He is a recent graduate of The Juilliard School where he studied with Kevin Short, earning his Master’s degree, and a proud alum of San Diego State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Performance under the instruction of Laurinda Nikkel.

Étude Arts is excited to welcome back Canadian conductor Jordan de Souza for general management.

Jordan de Souza received his appointment as General Music Director of Theater Dortmund and Chief Conductor of Dortmund Philharmoniker with a five-year contract commencing in August 2025.

A varied and dynamic schedule with many of the world’s great opera houses, symphony orchestras, and festivals reflect Jordan de Souza’s standing as one of the most sought-after conductors of his generation.  The artist’s energy, passion, charisma, and creativity are impactful to musicians and audiences alike and he is a thoughtful educator of new audiences opening doors welcomingly to the world of Classical Music.

In a statement, President Barry Tucker said, “The Richard Tucker Music Foundation is proud to announce that tenor Clay Hilley is the recipient of the 2024 Richard Tucker Award. The purpose of this award is to recognize an artist poised on the verge of a major international opera career, and Clay Hilley fits that description perfectly.”

Étude Arts proudly shares that on Easter Sunday Peter Kálmán received the surprise announcement onstage, following a performance of Parsifal, that he has been made a Kammersänger of the Hungarian State Opera House.

Artistic Director, András Almási-Tóth, accompanied by the celebration of singer colleagues, choristers, orchestra, and the audience cheered Peter Kálmán for this richly deserved honor.

Kammersänger Kálmán made his debut at the Hungarian State Opera House in 1993 and has bowed in an array of roles – from Papageno and Don Pasquale to Nick Shadow and Scarpia – and he has appeared on many of the world’s premier stages including the Opernhaus Zürich, Glyndebourne, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Salzburger Festspiele, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Seattle Opera, and Theater an der Wien.

His plans in the months ahead include performances at the Wiener Staatsoper, Latvian National Opera, Opéra Royal du Château de Versailles, Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Hungarian State Opera and debuts at the Metropolitan Opera and Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Étude Arts proudly announces that mezzo-soprano Fleur Barron joins our roster for territorial representation in The Americas in association with the London office of IMG Artists as general management.

Hailed as “a knockout performer” by The Times, Fleur Barron is a passionate interpreter of opera, chamber music, and concert works ranging from the baroque to the contemporary.  She is much sought after by luminaries of the classical music world including Semyon Bychkov, Sir Mark Elder, Barbara Hannigan, Ludovic Morlot, Vasily Petrenko, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Peter Sellars.

Fleur Barron is a dynamic presence on the world’s great recital stages and is committed to exploring the many ways music can facilitate cross-cultural dialogue and healing. She is passionate about curating inclusive chamber music programming that amplifies the voices of Asian creators and diverse communities.

Étude Arts proudly announces that bass-baritone William Socolof joins our roster for general management in association with Young Concert Artists who continue to handle his concert bookings.

Noted for his exceptional communication and dramatic skill across a broad range of repertoire, William graduated from The Juilliard School in spring 2022 and was a member of  the prestigious Merola Opera Program at San Francisco Opera during summer 2022.

He has appeared in performance with James Gaffigan and the National Symphony Orchestra, Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Richard Egarr and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and during three summers at the storied Marlboro Music Festival, he performed extensively works of Bach, Brahms, Mahler, and Schubert with pianists Jonathan Biss, Malcolm Martineau, and Mitsuko Uchida.  

William’s instrument and artistry have been nurtured under the tutelage of William Burden, Sanford Sylvan, Dawn Upshaw, and Stephanie Blythe.
